Dreams of Santorini is an instrumental song of mine that serves as the closing track for The Darker Side of Indifference. At the time of its completion, it was the first song I had written and recorded in its entirety for over two years of deflated creative initiative and marked the first steps towards completing the entire CD and shifting my life back in the proper direction.
It is an important song for me in that it represents hope; a light at the end of what seemed like a closed tunnel, figuratively speaking. However, the song was only half-written at a time when the light appeared and the uphill climb that is day-to-day life seemed to get a little easier. In a dramatic twist, the light at the end of the tunnel disappeared, the door was closed and I was kicked back down the hill by the time the song was truly finished and its tired sound and turbulent conclusion seem to reflect this change.
"Dreams of Santorini", however, remains the most optimistic song on the CD in retrospect.

[edit] Composition
This is the only song wherein I've had the privilege of experiencing a songwriting phenomenon that I had previously only heard described by artists much more widely heard than myself. Essentially, it just "came to me" and I didn't really know what that meant until I was flooded with a surprising sense of inspiration and the chords more or less literally wrote themselves from my fingertips. And oddly enough, this is a piano-based track and I don't consider myself a competent enough keyboardist to even improvise on a keyboard, let alone write an entire song that sticks in my memory.
But I guess there's a first time for everything...?
