Mock Dictionary
From Et cetera
Here's my Mock Dictionary: a collection of words that don't exist, but probably should (or maybe they shouldn't, whatever). I think it's pretty self-explanatory. Mostly this is here to define words that I may have used elsewhere on this website for an audience of people who obviously don't know what they mean.
I'm sure most people recognize those awkward social situations where you're attempting to describe something (perhaps a feeling, or an aroma, or a certain kind of atmosphere) but for whatever reason, words fail you. You just can't come up with the right thing to say so instead you say things like "I don't really know how to describe it" or "There's no word for it really, but you know what I mean, right?". Well, odds are, they probably don't but will nod enthusiastically just to get that lost look off your face. How ever can we solve this problem? Well, simply put, we can't. It's the kind of thing that's just...well, you know, it's hard to describe, but I'm sure you know what I mean, right? Don't you?
Unrelated to this problem, I've also learned that in conversation, a lot of people I know (and a number of them that I do not) have actually invented words. Sometimes by accident, and sometimes intentionally. In any case, I have yet to come across a place where I can find a good list of non-existent words and their accompanying definitions, so the solution is to make one, of course. The following is a comprehensive list of words that don't exist but should and some information to accompany them (i.e. citing sources if I have them, likely definitions, history of the word, etc.). As I may have mentioned, I did not make up all of these words, so credit for each of them is given to whomever it is due.
You never know, perhaps one day these words will come in handy when you just can't think of a way to describe something. Like that feeling, for example, when you just sorta...you know, can't find the words to...well, you know what I mean. Right?
